C&O Milepost 108.2
[Menu] |
Station Number: 108
Code Number: 0163
The Little River station most likely derived its name from the nearby Little River, which the C&O crossed on bridge 1087. The Little River flowed through the eastern part of Louisa County and into Hanover County. The name of the river came from the fact that it is a small fork of the North Anna River (Hanson, 1969).
My copies of the C&O’s Valuation maps indicate that the team track in Little River was retired in May of 1936. I have no real information about where the team track was located. The 1937 Side Track Record lists two sidings in Little River, the first (track number 832) 1456' long, the second (track number 833) 539' long. They split from the main just before milepost 108 and were arranged in a switchback to reach a sand pit. The listing includes a penciled in remark questioning whether track 833 was still in. There was also a waiting shed listed in Little River in 1937. Little River was listed as abandoned in the C&O Index of Stations and Tunnels (1943, updated to 1969). In 1978 track was laid to service the Bear Island Paper Company.
Maps |
These maps were prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
