C&O Milepost 122.8
Station Number: 123
Code Number: 0186
Teman station took its name from the nearby home of a distinguished Hanover County family. According to McChord (1979) Teman was once known as Mantico. The earliest mention of it that I have was in an alphabetical list of stations in the 1906 Industrial Guide where it was listed as Mantico. There was a 595' loading track (track number 848) and a passenger shelter listed here in both the 1937 Side Track Record and the 1963 track charts. According to the C&O’s 1950 Industrial Directory, the Teman team track had a capacity of 8 cars. For some reason, it was listed under the Beaver Dam entry. The Beaver Dam and Teman sidings served the following industries: the Birchall-Hammer Lumber Co. (sawmill), the A. L. Luckado coal yard, Linwood Marks (pulpwood shipper), the R. S. McDonald lumber yard, and E. C. Terrell (pulpwood shipper). The shelter was removed in November, 1964 and moved to a nearby farm. Sometime on the 1980’s it was purchased by Causey and Bev Davis. They moved it to Richmond and restored it. The C&O was still handling freight here as late as 1985. The loading track was retired in September, 1991.

This is the C&O’s shelter from Teman as it exists today. The shelter was moved from its original site to a farm near Holliday, where it sat next to the Holliday shelter. In 1977 Causey and Bev Davis purchased the Teman shelter and moved it to Richmond. They restored it to the appearance shown in the photos. According to Causey Davis, they found a date of 1917 carved on one of walls during the restoration. (November 2009 photo by Causey Davis. Used with permission.)

Maps |
These maps were prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
